Books That Celebrates Books
Heya! As bibliophiles, we sometimes look for books about books, bibliophiles and books set in libraries or book stores. After reading some books in this sub-genre, here are some books that I recommend as a bibliophile (or a bookdragon, a new word formed by Bookstagram).
- The Book Thief by Markus Zusak- Is any list of books about book lovers complete without this one? It is a must-have on any book lover's shelf. The book features lead character, Liesel Meminger, who steals books to read. As the World War 2 intensifies in the Nazi Germany. she steals and reads books, finding comfort and strength in the written words. Its uniqueness lies in its narration of the events by Death itself. A solid 10/10 recommendation.
- The Lost Bookshop by Evie Woods- Set in Dublin (for the most part), it is a story of three characters and a disappearing bookstore! The author weaves elements of magical realism with the themes of feminism, books and familial relationships. The title is quite catchy too.
- The Door-to-Door Bookstore by Carsten Henn- The novel follows the story of a 72-year-old book delivery man, who delivers books to his loyal customers. He even gives them literary names, ranging from Mr. Darcy, Mrs. Longstocking to Dr. Faustus. A nine-year-old girl Schascha joins him on his rounds, which he takes time to adjust to but forms an unlikely friendship with. The duo helps his loyal customers in their stories as they deliver books that he recommends/gifts them.
- The Stationery Shop by Marjan Kamali- 2 youngsters fall in love at a bookshop against the backdrop of political turmoil brewing in 1950s Iran. Though only the initial part is set in bookstore with Roya reading the translation of literature from all around the world, the book makes for a great read anyway.
- Paper Moon by Rehana Munir- Fiza inherits a sum of amount from her late estranged father, whose dream was to set up a bookstore. Initially hesitant, she brings his dream to life as she sets up the bookstore- Paper Moon- in the early 2000s Bandra in Mumbai. Add to it the poetic and mysterious love interest who frequents the shop and her ex-boyfriend who still have feelings for her. The book revolves around the themes of feminism, family and love. It may not match the level of books mentioned above, but surely makes for a decent read.
- Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop by Hwang Bo-Reum- A bookshop set in a quaint neighborhood of Seoul attracts visitors for its vibe, along with their coffee, and builds a community of readers. Marriage and family dynamics are also its secondary themes.
Here are few of the books I liked which are dedicated to books, bibliophiles or are books set in bookstores. Keep an eye on this blogpost once in a while, as I will keep adding more books in this list with time. That's all for now as you go engage in these bookish delights. Happy Reading!
