To start with, Happy Mother's Day! My mom asked me to write a blog on mother or father for as long as I remember. So here it goes.
Mother-daughters share a peculiar love-hate relationship. This is especially true once girls touch their late teenage years when opinions are quite contrasting. Nowadays, this can be even earlier with youngsters getting access to media with all the different opinions and perspectives to choose from. If there is no acceptance of one from either side, accepting of the opinions or person they are, which happens more often than not, it leads to fights. Repeated cycles of being close and happy and arguing and not speaking to each other.
Me and my mom are like North and south poles on a lot of topics like marriage, kids, weddings, religion, etc. While I'm the one who supports low-key weddings, my mom would like to invite the whole and nearby districts if I ever get married and spend truckloads on the wedding. Some are banters, while some go on to be arguments.
The daughter's hopes and aims and the mother's concerns often lie at 2 ends of a spectrum which leads to collisions. Modern-day girls may not care what the world thinks of them or their choices, but it gets annoying when their mother does.
In one of the interviews, Sudha Murthy once said in an interview that mothers can enjoy themselves with their sons till they are 14 and with their daughters after 19.
There are a few films and series, that depict mother-daughter relationships in a realistic (and funny) way. Devi & Nalini from the Netflix series 'Never Have I Ever' (most relatable as an Indian daughter), Ginny & Georgia from the series 'Ginny and Georgia' and 'Shakuntala Devi & Anupama from her biopic movie on Prime Video. Do watch these, especially the series. If you have other suggestions, for books as well as movies/series, do post names of the book/movie/series in the comment section.
To conclude, love often wins in this relationship, no matter the fights (as long as not abusive, toxic or manipulative in any kind).
