Elixir Of Life

We all want our lives to be immortal. The idea of forever interests us. Though human life itself is not immortal, the memories and legacy we live behind have the potential to be immortal and remembered by upcoming generations.

The elixir of life, as per the dictionary, means a preparation supposedly able to prolong life indefinitely. Though I would like to describe the elixir of life in the ways we can live a fulfilled life, or one’s dream life, and leave a bundle of happy memories behind for the people to remember us by.

Basic life needs, like food, water, shelter and clothing are necessary to sustain life. Though human lives are mortal, we are bound to die. But our work and how we treat people have the potential to be immortal. Staying healthy is important so that your daily life activities are not affected by any health concerns. To do anything great in life, you first need to be healthy, physically and mentally. Unfortunately, both issues are on the rise nowadays, so we need to take care of ourselves and reach out for help, where needed.

Your work, in your area of interest and expertise, can leave behind a legacy to be remembered. If you like/love the work you do, you will be inspired to do better, even with temporary setbacks, and you will have work that is immortal in the memories of people and/or helps in further development in the field of your profession. Hustle culture is trending, work hard and smart, but do not try to convert (all) your hobbies into work and maintain a work-life balance. As Zakir Khan said in his stand-up special Tathastu, professional goals are temporary (they can be attempted tomorrow), but personal loss is permanent.

I came across this Instagram post - positions are temporary, ranks and titles are limited, but the way you treat people will always be remembered. People will always remember the way
you treated them, and they will probably share their experience (with you) with others. Be humble, kind, and helpful, but draw boundaries so that people cannot take you for granted. Your actions and words are both important. Be careful with your words, as they can never be taken back, and it can remain with the person in their heart and mind their whole life. Your actions should be compatible with your words and not hurtful either. Spread love, kindness and smiles.

And not to forget, sense of humour. Life itself is serious enough and we need not make it too serious. A sense of humour is required to make life happier, and create happy and funny moments that will be remembered. Jokes, some harmless pranks with family and friends, laughing together only to stop looking at them and burst into laughter again, still your stomach hurts and cheeks get tired. As its said- Laughter is the best medicine. We may live a little longer with more happiness and laughter, and leave behind happy memories for others once we are no more.

Though it is a human’s natural want to be remembered by people, for good reasons, it is also important that one lives a happy and contended life. Do what you love, at work and in hobbies. Set your own definitions for success and happiness. When you live a happy life, which many people may not agree with, but you are content, you will not regret it and will live a quality life (on a professional, personal and social front).

This is what the elixir of life truly stands for - making the best life for yourself, which you are happy with, a life filled with fun and laughter and leaving behind a legacy with your work and happy memories in the hearts of people to remember you by. That when you would be living the last moments of your life, with the tape of your life going back in rewind motion, there would be no what-ifs.

Elixir of life- Not a magical potion, but your own attitude, behaviour and passion to live life at its best, seasoned with a sense of humor.
