Dear Prega News, She Cannot Carry Both Sometimes

Recently, there has been an video advertisement of Prega News going around, giving the message that the women can handle both her kid and her career at the same time. To watch that advertisement (in Hindi), click here.

Though it is true for many women out there, it is also somewhere disregarding the choice of those who do not wish to have kids or those who aren't able to manage both her kid and her career. The ad seemed to be gloryfying motherhood and guilt tripping those who don't want to go down that path for whatever reason.

Ofcourse motherhood can be great, but only when you want it. If you do not want to become a mother for some time or never ever wanna become one, or if you are not sure if you would be able to manage your child and professional life together, that's just as fine.

One need to be very sure if they want to become a parent or not. And especially when it comes to biological child, then there is whole another pregnancy phase and possible cause of hereditary health issues. Though when it comes to adoption, there is whole long application and approval process, the agency judging if you (and your partner) are able enough to have and able to look after kids. One needs to be very sure if you (and your partner) will be able to look after the child, be it biological or adopted.

Many women do happen to manage both, but there is working mother's guilt lots of mothers go through. They go through guilt for not being able to be with their child all the time, missing important moments of the kids (first words, first step etc), doubting their parenting, etc. There is also Postpartum Depression for mothers caused due to various reasons (as well as in fathers, though the cases are less).

When it comes to mothers in work force, many take long leaves after the baby arrives in their life, but some never return back to the work force. The child care and running the home takes up most of their time.

Honestly, even the idea of "super-moms" is bit problematic. It puts an overwhelming pressure on mothers to excel at everything smoothly- home, career, children. We never hear of "super-dads". And the ad just seems to spread the message of super-moms handling everything smoothly, without them getting overwhelmed. That does not happen in reality ever. All the mothers, at some time, gets overwhelmed with doubts, guilt etc. Also no role of fathers in managing the child and their careers together?

Motherhood (or even parenthood in broader terms) is the biggest responsibility. Its not a identity but a addition to one's identity as a whole, one major role they can play in their life. So if one is not sure or do not want to have a child, they are free to not have one. Its not possible for everyone to have a child and to be able to manage both child and career. Child deserves the best from their parent(s), be it biological child or adopted, so one needs to be sure if they are willing to take such huge responsibility and will be able to do it efficiently.

On the day, the video was released, Preganews had shared this on their Instagram profile. Well, not every 2 lines on the pregnancy test is good news for everybody. For many, even a single line is a good news. Maybe the company is forgetting that they are making the product for pregnancy tests, not for tests to come positive and that being a good news.

Previously, Prega News had uploaded a video on their YouTube and other social media platforms, which was beautiful and spoke about how women are complete by themselves. We need more advertisements like those. To watch that video, click here.

And if the advertisement was for women's day, it should had respected both the choices when it comes to motherhood, and not just glorified one.

In conclusion, both the paths are beautiful, as long as you want it and you know you will be able to manage it all, most of the times, as a single parent or with your partner. One cannot be glorified (here, motherhood) while other is guilt tripped for the choices they make.
