Why girls and women need to learn self-defence

When I think that nothing more cruel cases of rapes can happen to girls and women, every day a new rape case comes up, crueller than the yesterday's. What has happened to India?! Why so many rapes and assault cases on a daily basis? You may recover from coronavirus (or non-terminal life-threatening diseases for that matter) but not mental trauma or even death caused by assaults and rapes. I have no hope that this mentality gonna change in years. Girls and women need to learn self-defence, no matter what your age is. Learn basic self-defence which can help you, if not advanced martial arts. Carry pepper spray (you can buy it online, sharing link at the end of the blogpost for Indian customers. If you are non-Indian, you can search it online) with you wherever you go outside. Keep emergency numbers in your phone. I don't wish, but if you ever confront such a situation, hit the person enough to immobilize them so that he cannot follow you for some minutes and run away from that place to a safe place (as you don't know who else is there). Be alert all the time. If possible, do not go to unsafe and isolated places.

The mentality of India needs to be changed too. The mentality of guys, men and even girls and women who assault others. Teach them that no person, especially a girl/women, is NOT a sexual object. Then no one is a sex slave. Do not teach your daughters "agar koi cheda toh usse maar dena, case tera baap ledega", teach your sons " agar kisi ladki ko cheda toh tera baap hi tere upar case karega" (Do not teach your daughters that if someone assaults them, the girl can murder them and your father will fight the case, but teach your sons that if they ever assault a girl, his own father would file a case on him). This can apply vice-versa too. We don't know when the rape and assaults cases would reduce when the mentality would change, so girls and women need to start to learn to defend herself.

Families should teach kids about self-defence, about good and bad touch, consent, that never to assault or rape anyone, and no person is a sexual object or sex slave, etc. We all know that in India, it's hard to get justice for assault and rapes victims and survivors. That they don't get justice or even if they get, it's late (we all have seen Nirbhaya case. And also just hanging them without any torture is not justice as they have not gone through the pain Nirbhaya did, they should have been tortured to death). It's better to be safe and sound rather than fall victim to it and hoping for legal justice, making rounds of courts.

I hope that every person is safe and nobody gets assaulted or raped. I'm sharing some pics and a link of an image which can be useful.

Disclaimer- Please learn from a certified martial arts/ self-defence coach by attending classes offline (after the lockdown is lifted) and not online videos as they can sometimes even get you in danger. Here are the reason why not to learn from videos - Click here

Other than fight or flight, freeze exists too. Many victims freeze when they get assaulted/groped and can't defend themselves. Self-defense can only work so little. I did not delete this blog post cause some things are still correct or relevant. The main and lasting solution is to teach the sons better- to respect and gracefully accept rejections. Fathers, above anyone, should set the examples for their sons by behaving respectfully towards women.
