Stop casteism
Recently I had watched the Bollywood film Article 15 which is based on caste discrimination. The one dialogue in the film really makes sense- "why are we following thousand years old practice till now? (the dialogue is similar to these, I don't remember the dialogue exactly).
Its 2020 and we still follow the caste system in India. I think whats the even need of it. The only thing it caused is even more discrimination and nothing else. Before watching the film, I thought the caste only affected people in government jobs and in marriages. That the untouchability is over now. But I was wrong. In some areas, it still has made the life of people from 'lower castes' a living hell.
I feel whats the even need of such stupid practice? Heck, we even have chapter(s) about casteism in our history textbooks. Why?! Its 2020 and we still follow casteism in India. Casteism in itself is also a restriction and a threat to freedom of many.
Casteism affects the professional, personal and even social life of a person. People from higher caste who want to take up a government job have less possibility of getting it due to reservation. And in other areas where untouchability or casteism is still strictly followed, people in those areas cannot get a white-collar job and have to do menial or even life-threatening jobs. If there is a law where we cannot ask a person from which caste they belong to (I saw that in Article 15, don't know if is it true and how much true it is), why is there a need to mention castes in official documents either? We can remove the caste thing from official documents, in government and private job applications, in school/ college applications and wherever possible. Caste-based reservation should be removed to eradicate the casteism as it is an important thing which is still encouraging casteism from my point of view. Even if the reservation is there, within the reservations, the jobs and educational seats should be given to deserving ones among the reserved ones. Be it from the reserved category or non-reserved category, the seats and jobs should be given to deserving people. There was a meme I came across of Barack Obama and PM Narendra Modi, where Modi asks why the USA is so developed and Barack Obama reply by saying that they give the jobs to those who deserve it, not anyone reserved.
Caste has been evil in all marriages, especially love marriages. Families and society still disagree with inter-caste (and even inter-religious for that matter) marriages in 2020. Families care about what society would say if they let their family member(s) marry someone from another caste, that it would 'cut their nose' and ruin their reputation in society. Famous personalities like Harivansh Rai Bachchan- Teji Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan- Jaya Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan- Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and many many more (see this link for Bollywood couples who had inter-caste/ inter-religious marriage https://lovevivah.com/matrimony/blog/matrimonial-buzz/7-bollywood-couples-who-followed-their-heart-and-did-inter-caste-marriage/) and they're a lot of couples among common people who had an successful inter-caste or inter-religious marriage. Why can't families just throw away the caste and let their family members, specifically kids, marry or date someone out of their caste or religion? If kids can break-up with their lover just for their parents' happiness, why can't parents throw apart caste and religious differences for their child's happiness? It is even more shocking when families do honour killing when their family members marry someone out of their caste or religion. The irony is that some of the people who have seen movies like Sairat, Dhadak, and heard of legendary love stories (fiction or real) appreciate the film's or story's content but when their family member approach for inter-faith marriage, they deny. Many lovers commit suicide because of the family don't agree for inter-caste marriage. How depressing is all this! It is 2020 and we should let people decide whom they want to marry, irrespective of the caste, religion or even gender the other person belongs to. You may not want your family member(s) to run-and-marry which would 'cut your nose in the society'. It would be better if you let them marry in your presence and with your blessings, as whatever you do, people gonna judge anyways. Are you ok with destroying the life of your loved ones just because of judgemental talk (which would only go on for a few days or a month at maximum) of people who may not even matter to you? So stop caring what society would say about inter-caste or inter-religious marriage and support your family member(s) in whatever decision they make about dating or marrying someone.
Caste even has a negative effect on the social life of a person. The people from lower castes are discriminated against various things, facilities, and many other things. Like in film Article 15, they could be even raped! They face many social restrictions, have less or no friends, no access to public places, and many other things. This mostly happens in socially backward and rural areas.
We need to stop teaching about castes to the younger generation from families, society, and schools/ colleges because it is of no use. Let's scarp out those chapters in our history (and even political science) textbooks which teach kids about casteism. Rather than spreading discrimination, let us spread unity. Lets us remove the caste thing from official applications and documents. Let us support people who want to do inter-castes and inter-religious marriages or in dating/ live-in relationship with someone from another caste.
Declaration- This is my own views. I don't intend to offend any community, government or any person or group. My sole purpose to write this blog is to bring a change and put an end to casteism and caste-based discrimination.
